You are hired by a Pakistani distributor of consumer goods, Burque, to improve their forecasting capabilities. You are tasked with coming up with quarterly forecasts for an item that appears to have level, seasonality, and trend. While the company does have an existing Holt-Winter forecasting model, no one knows what the parameters (Alpha, Beta, or Gamma) are. You do have some information. For example, you know that historically, the demand in each quarter follows this distribution: – Q1 (January through March) = 60% of average quarterly demand – Q2 (April through June) = 80% of average quarterly demand – Q3 (July through September) = 140% of average quarterly demand – Q4 (October through December) = 120% of average quarterly demand. You just ran the forecast at the end of September (end of 2014-Q3) and you have the following estimates: For level: a^2014-Q3 = 1052 units For trend: b^2014-Q3 = 40.3 units per quarter

1.What is your forecast for demand for 2014-Q4? In other words, what is x^2014Q3,2014Q4?

2.Suppose the actual demand in 2014-Q4 is 1050 units. What is the lowest possible value for your estimate for level, a^2014Q4?

3.The model was run at the end of 2014-Q4. It provided you with the most recent estimates of each pattern. The estimate for level, a^2014Q4 was 1067.8. What is the value of alpha?

4.The model was run at the end of 2014-Q4. The estimate for trend, b^2014Q4 was found to be 39.6. What is value of beta?

5.The model was run at the end of 2014-Q4. The estimate for seasonality, F^2014Q4 was found to be 1.189, before any normalization was done. What is the value of gamma?

Solution:
1)

"A database management system (DBMS) is a collection of programs that manages the database structure and controls access to the data stored in the database".

The DBMS serves as the intermediary between the user and the database. The database structure itself is stored as a collection of files, So, we can access the data in those files through the DBMS.

• Advantages of Database Management System (DBMS)

• Improved data sharing.

• Improved data security.

• Better data integration.

• Minimized data inconsistency.

• Improved data access.

• Improved decision making.

• Increased end-user productivity.

Components of DBMS

The database management system can be divided into five major components, they are:

1. Hardware

2. Software

3. Data

4. Procedures

5. Database Access Language

DBMS Components: Hardware

When we say Hardware, we mean computer, hard disks, I/O channels for data, and any other physical component involved before any data is successfully stored into the memory.

When we run Oracle or MySQL on our personal computer, then our computer's Hard Disk, our Keyboard using which we type in all the commands, our computer's RAM, ROM all become a part of the DBMS hardware.

DBMS Components: Software

This is the main component, as this is the program which controls everything. The DBMS software is more like a wrapper around the physical database, which provides us with an easy-to-use interface to store, access and update data.

The DBMS software is capable of understanding the Database Access Language and intrepret it into actual database commands to execute them on the DB.

DBMS Components: Data

Data is that resource, for which DBMS was designed. The motive behind the creation of DBMS was to store and utilise data.

DBMS Components: Procedures

Procedures refer to general instructions to use a database management system. This includes procedures to setup and install a DBMS, To login and logout of DBMS software, to manage databases, to take backups, generating reports etc.

DBMS Components: Database Access Language

Database Access Language is a simple language designed to write commands to access, insert, update and delete data stored in any database

2) Database Implementation Procedure

Stage 1 : Define Scope of the Database Project

Stage 2 : Organize Database Project

Stage 3 : Select Database Management System Products

Stage 4 : Develop Initial Implementation Plan and Schedule

Stage 5 : Design Database

Stage 6 : Perform Training

Stage 7 : Install and Test Database

Stage 8 : Develop Detailed Conversion Plan

Stage 9 : Convert Existing Applications

Stage 10 : Fine-Tune Database

Stage 11 : Periodically Review Database Performance

3) Reason why ABC Corporation should implement DBMS is,

• Keep track of all transctions.

• Provide information that will help the company to run the business more efficiently.

• Better management of people matters.

• Efficient inventory tracking.

Solution:
Now Everyone can fly

Tan Sri Dr. Anthony Francis Fernandes (born 30 April 1964) is a Malaysian entrepreneur. He is the founder of Tune Air Sdn. Bhd., who introduced the first budget no-frills airline, AirAsia, to Malaysians with the tagline "Now everyone can fly". Fernandes managed to turn AirAsia, a failing government-linked commercial airline, into a highly successful budget airline public-listed company. He has since founded the Tune Group of companies. He is also the majority shareholder of Queens Park Rangers Football Club.

He was also instrumental in lobbying the then-Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in mid-2003, to propose the idea of open skies agreements with neighbouring Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore. As a result, these nations have granted landing rights to AirAsia and other discount carriers.

As of February 2014, Forbes Asia valued Fernandes' net worth at $650 million, ranking him at number 28 on the Forbes list of Malaysia's Richest.

He is also an Overseas Citizen of India, owing to his partial Indian ancestry.

Background

Early life and education

Fernandes was born in Kuala Lumpur on 30 April 1964 to a Goan father[3] and a mother of mixed Indian (Malayalee[4]) and Asian-Portuguese (Kristang) descent who had been raised in Malacca, Malaysia.[3][5] At a young age, he would follow his mother who sold Tupperware at Tupperware parties.[5]

He was educated at The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur. Starting at age 12, from 1976 to 1983, he studied at Epsom College boarding school in England.[6] He matriculated to the London School of Economics and graduated with a degree in accounting.

Career

He worked very briefly with Virgin Atlantic as an auditor[citation needed], subsequently becoming the financial controller for Richard Branson's Virgin Communications in London from 1987 to 1989 before he joined Warner Music International London as Senior Financial Analyst.

Fernandes was admitted as Associate Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 1991 and became Fellow Member in 1996. He is currently a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Fernandes was formerly a Warner Music executive in Malaysia[9], and Vice President, ASEAN at Warner Music South East Asia from December 1999 to July 2001.[8]

When Time Warner Inc announced its merger with America Online Inc., Fernandes left to pursue his dream of starting a budget no-frills airline.

In September 2001, Fernandes purchased AirAsia and became its chief executive

Contribution

AIRASIA A SUCCESS STORY

Low-cost carriers have come a long way since the concept was first commissioned. They have broadened their routes, improved their marketing and their service. Many, like AirAsia, have won awards, validating their importance both in and to the travel market. Many, however, still beat the stigma of the low-cost moniker.

Other ventures[edit]

In 2007, Fernandes started a hotel chain, Tune Hotels, based on the no frills concept. It has properties in Britain, Australia and the Far East

Caterham Group[edit]

Fernandes is the founder of the Caterham F1 Formula One team, which began racing in 2010 as Lotus Racing and raced in 2011 as Team Lotus. On 2 July 2014, Caterham F1 was sold to a Swiss and Middle Eastern consortium.

Football[edit]

Fernandes is a fan of English club West Ham United and was involved in talks regarding a potential takeover of the club in May 2011, at which stage it looked as if he was going to acquire a 51 per cent stake in the club. Former West Ham chairman Andrew Bernhardt even flew to Kuala Lumpur to try and finalise the deal, but the two parties failed to agree on the price.
