Explanation:
During fertilization, the sperm must fuse with the plasma membrane and then penetrate the female egg. Upon sperm entry, it initiates a process called acrosome reaction. Acrosome reaction allows fusion with oocyte membrane by penetrating the zona pellucida of the egg. Another reaction initiated upon penetration of the cortical granules is cortical reaction whereby the cortical granules from the egg are released. This reaction is very essential as it prevents further fusion of multiple sperm with one egg.
