The generally accepted model for biological membranes is the:

Select one:

  1. a pure lipid bilayer model
  2. a fluid transport model
  3. a solid-liquid model
  4. a fluid mosaic model

Answers

  1. a fluid mosaic model

Explanation:

The plasma membrane is described by the fluid mosaic model as a mosaic of components which includes both peripheral and integral proteins, cholesterol, carbohydrates and phospholipids which gives the membrane a fluid character. The hydrophilic part of the membrane is in contact with aqueous fluid both inside and outside the membrane while the hydrophobic part is water hating and faces the against the aqueous sides. This arrangement gives the membrane a bilayer structure. Cholesterol helps the membrane remain fluid in cold temperatures. The integral proteins helps in transport of molecules through the bilayer. All this structural arrangement describes the fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane
